Mikko's rant
| |
What a dark week in the history of mankind: I now have the PS2.
Having bought it reluctantly to use for reviewing games, I've
taken some time to play around with it, "gain
perspective", and here are my findings. The system isn't bad,
as in "CD-i bad" or even "Jaguar bad", but a
lot about it is dissatisfying. It's just not fun. The memory card
costs a fortune and games are hellishly expensive too. The DVD
playback, although quite viewable in terms of picture quality, is
really intolerant of disc scratches; rental discs are a pain on
it. The best games I've seen look OK - like standard Dreamcast
titles, only they usually play much worse. Several games have
serious framerate & pop-up issues, and the
"WOW"-factor is nonexistent, even if I ignore my huge
bias. Whatever's in there is not being used right. I've heard
Z.O.E. will be the first game to really show off the slab of black
plastic, but until then, I just can't believe this is what killed
the Dreamcast. Oh, and I don't see the fuss about GT3 either: the
shots I've seen on IGN are ok, but they're not gorgeous, let alone
anything I haven't seen before on other systems.
